Feel the rhizome

After hearing the word media ecology, I have a hard time trying to understand the meaning of this particular terminology. It seems to be vague in many aspects, therefore, it is even more challenging  to think of ideas that I am about the focus on for the following semester.

After reading Fuller’s article, I have gained the sense that affects as well as our environment do matter. The vibes that Fuller discussed in his essay in a lot of way shapes our perceptions even ourselves invisibly. The article written by Theresa Brennan provide a more expanded as well as scientific analyzation of such influence of ourselves by the environment around us. In Brennan’s article, she mentioned that the transmission of affects do exist and we usually underrated the power of it. “The origin of transmitted affects is social in that these affects do not only arise within a particular person but also come from without. They come via an interaction with other people and an environment. ” This quote from her accentuate the fact that we are interacting with other person as well as nonhuman features around us and those altogether create the environment around us. Since we are interacting with the environment passively as well as actively, we are influenced and also influencing all those affects. Similar to what Fuller has mentioned, Brennan also wrote that “we are not self-contained in terms of our energies. there is no secure distinction between the “individual” and the “environment”. The transmission of affects should be looked at and analyzed carefully in understanding ourselves, as well as the social context as a whole.

The other writing by Deleuze and Guattari focuses more on explaining what “Rhizome” is in terms of its effects and significance. I find it useful in thinking about the media ecology I might choose in that instead of trying to understand the start, the origin of an issue or a sensation, I should focus more on the relation and the interactions between the factors. I like Deleuze and Guattari ’s descriptions that “the fabric of rhizome is the conjunction”. Indeed, when I look at the union square, the ecology that I might choose, I could not see the logic of any though of mine regarding this place. This is a place of conjunctions of social elements, no matter human or nonhuman. Those affects together create the special atmosphere in this place. In addition, in analyzing this ecology, rather than trying to write out points of features, clearing out the important rhizome seems more helpful in that rhizomes, according to Deleuze and Guattari, “is composed not of units but of dimensions, or rather directions in motion”.
