unpacking my semantic baggage

diabetes: fast food — oilycheap medical condition genetic

obesity: physical appearance fat voluntary

bodega: corner store — convenient — quick — unhealthy

hunger: suffering — privilege — depravation inequality

health: a choice — longterm — effort wellnessconscious —

To effectively communicate the affect of my ecology, I was trying to think of 5 words that come to mind. During this process, I realized how semantically diverse our understanding of words is. So when I decided to study “obesity” in East Harlem, I took my own preconceived notions to the ecology and this shaped my understanding of the issue. These notions are formed by personal and cultural experiences.

Here’s my attempt to understand my own biases as I dig deeper into my ecology.
